Back to School

Hey all, I've now been in Newport for nine days, and am just going into my day-and-a-half of rest before throwing myself into Sunday morning.

This week is a biggy because its the week all the schools open up, and so, although our teen and kids clubs here don't begin until next week I've been sorting out distributing flyers and stuff for them, and I've also been in school three mornings this week as a kind-of class assistant.

This is the part of the job that I've been most apprehensive about, and David has made it clear a few times that if after trying these mornings in school regularly I find that I don't like them, then we can find other things for me to work on, but actually I surprised myself with how much I've enjoyed being in school.

So Tuesday morning I was in school briefly just to be introduced to the Headteachers at both the infants and juniors church schools, who were really nice people, and then had the rest of the day off for songwriting, filmwatching and stuff.

Wednesday was my big first day in the infants, which was great fun! To year 2 at Malpas Church Infants I am now known as Mr Henley - which in itself I find hilarious, but also they're really great kids and I'm finding myself connecting with them really well. I was given plenty of stuff to do and had some good conversations about random stuff like guessing my age and things with a few of the children. I also got to listen to a few of them read which shocked me with the huge difference in ability from one end of the class to the other. I came out on Wednesday afternoon totally astounded by how much I enjoyed the morning and wanting to go again. I also sat through an assembly... and enjoyed it - suddenly when you're not actually a student assemblies become really interesting.

Thursday and Friday I've been in the Junior School, which is a lot different and I haven't enjoyed as much. Originally I think I was supposed to be assigned to year 6, but the teacher didn't really know what to do with me so after an hour or so of being asked to "wander around school and get myself acquainted", I landed after break in year 4 and James (or Mr) Maloney's class. James is one of those teachers in every hundred or so who every child loves and is really inspiring. He set me to work on the computers helping children design and build bamzooki, which I know David and Bethan will be familiar with.

For those not in the know Bamzooki is a CBBC program where teams of children pit their strange robot/animal/monsters against each other in different challenges which they've designed using the free software you can download from the BBC website. So I pretty much became an instant favourite with all the boys in year 4 for giving them access to this wonderful thing! Actually most of them needed no help at all and were busy discussing advanced tactics for building the ultimate Zooks, from leg positioning to weight distribution and of course colour scheme.

Thursday I went back to Mr Maloney's class to help out with some early morning Su Doku, which luckily wasn't too hard - although I have brought home one of the puzzles that the children were set because I couldn't do it, so Bethan's going to have to help me with that sometime (she's a Su Doku wiz). Then I listened to some kids read from Years 3 and 4 before the end of the morning.

Thursday was a big day as well because I had a worship group practise in the evening and a practise with the youth for arranging the Time For Praise service, which both went well. Then in the afternoon, which is probably the biggest thing this week, I had a meeting with David and Sarah, who voluntarily co-ordinates the worship group about Time for Praise, where some big decisions were made and plans formed which are really going to make a difference to the service over the next year - growing it from a kind-of seeker service into a proper worship service in its own right with its own congregation and ethos. Also, big changes will be made to the way the worship group is run - in order to enable spontaneity in worship and to properly cement the role of the "worship leader" in the group where this has been muddy for some time.

This Sunday is the usual formal communion service followed by Time for Praise led by the Youth, and then Evening Prasie as usual. Next week I will be in school again, in the infants on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, and the Juniors on Thursday and Friday. Then all our clubs/activities also start up again with 24-7, our youth home group, on Monday evening; SMASH in school on Tuesday afternoon; and Worship Group and Youth Club on Thursday night. However, David is off on holiday on Monday I think so all this will be without his supervision - for the next couple of weeks Frieda will be supervising me instead.

Prayer

Thankyous:

Thank God for showing me that school can be fun!

Thank God for a vision and actual plans in motion to develop TIme for Praise into a fresh expression of worship to Him.

Pray for:

All the services on Sunday especially Time for Praise led by the young people, and for the abitious drama we are attempting.

SMASH next week that it would go well after all the preparation and that plenty of children (and parents) would come and enjoy themselves.

The other clubs starting next week that they would get back into their usual pattern after the summer holidays.

The Junior School's visit to St Mary's on Thursday morning that Frieda would put across Christinaity well to the children and also that the teachers would come with open minds.

God Bless,

J.

New Beginnings! - Part 2: Some Practical Things and Prayer - Attempt No. 2

My previous attempt at this post failed miserably and I ended up losing everything I'd written so this is attempt number two.

Part 2a: Practical Bit

I've decided to try and put in place a little regular timetable for updating the blog. It's by no means strict, but I'll try and stick to it so please don't worry if I'm too busy to post or haven't gotten round to writing anything, especially on a Wednesday. I also might add in a few extra updates every so often, so I'd recommend that you subscribe by following either set of instructions in my previous post.

The Schedule

Fridays - Main Update: On a Friday, begins my day-and-a-half off so I thought I'd try and do a big update of what I've been up to this week and including prayer requests and things as well. This will be the main update each week and the one I'm most worried about getting done.

Wednesdays - Thoughts & Ramblings: I've just realised today that Wednesday afternoons are also quite free so I've decided to use this time as a kindof admin afternoon to get things done like computer work, photocopying and preparation for other things later in the week. But also, I thought it'd be good to spend some time preparing and then writing a quick blog entry with my thoughts on some bible passage or something, probably relating to worship just to challenge my theological skillz as something fun to do, so hopefully this will work out and my thoughts will be useful and actually maybe bless someone... we'll see.

So I'll post up a big update this Friday afternoon, and then either later on if I get the chance, or probably next Wednesday I'll post the first of the other ones. So hopefully I'll be able to get out two posts a week, maybe missing a couple if things are a little busy but hopefully I'll be able to stick to that plan.

Part 2b: Prayer

I realised that I probably should have stuck some prayer requests and stuff on the end of my previous post so I thought I'd make up for it by covering it here...

Thankyous:

Thank God for the amazing welcome I've had at St Mary's and for good relationships with David, Catharine and the rest of the congregation.

Thank God for a great SMASH planning meeting yesterday, and for the awesome giftings and the unity of the team that has been put together.

Thank God for the openness of the headteachers in the Church Schools and for the ease with which I'm working with them.

Thank God for my walk to church every morning.

Outside:

Pray for Catherine's friends Adrian and Ruth, who have been involved in a major car crash. Adrain is in Intensive Care fighting for his life and Ruth has severe damage to both her legs.

St Mary's Prayer Diary intructs us to pray for the Holy Land - for the relationship between Israel and the Lebanon and I think this is really important - especially those caught in the middle of the conflict. Brother Andrew talked about a group of orphans left behind in Southern Lebanon, and I'm sure there are others stuck in the middle both physically and politically.

Inside:

Pray for the Worship Group practise and the Time for Praise practise afterwards for the youth who are leading it this Sunday.

Pray for a good relationship with Frieda, our NSM Curate, who is my pastoral supervisor, and who will be taking over David's role supervising me whilst he is away next week and the the week after on holiday.

Pray for a refreshing each morning from the holy spirit for me, so that I'll be able to sustain my routine of getting up and out for 8.30 each morning without dying / falling asleep halfway through the morning.

Pray for a shy little boy who I met at the Church Infants School this morning and made a pretty instant connection with straight away. I was helping him with handwriting and reading as he is at the bottom of his class (Year 2), and has severe problems with recognising letters and reading and writing. Pray that God would really touch his life through me, and that he would not lack confidence because he doesnt have the same abilities as the rest of his class.

Thankyou in advance for your prayers, and God Bless,

Cheers!

New Beginnings!

Hi all, thought I'd actually post in the blog I'm supposed be updating regularly! Its now Tuesday afternoon in Malpas, Newport, so I've been here nearly a week so about time for a blog entry I think.

I moved into my new home on Wednesday last week, into my new room, which is a little smaller than my room at home but does have a double bed which makes up for it. Bob and Jan (and of course Gareth - hereafter known as G!) are brilliant and I'm basically a fourth member of the family.

St Mary's is a lot different to St Mike's but that's not really a bad thing - there's a real sense of community about a smaller parish church and its something I've noticed before in Abertridwr and in Bargoed when we've gone to lead worship and things and its really wonderful to be part of something like that. Everyone is really welcoming and so it's been really easy to settle into my different roles here - I've just come from a meeting to plan something called SMASH which is a kind of Children's Service or Afterschool Club run by St. Mary's which was great, really constructive and I was accepted straight away in my role in helping arrange and co-ordinate that.

David Parfitt - my boss and the vicar at St. Mary's, is great to work with and suprisingly, especially as I'm normally quite slow to really open up with people, we're already getting on really well. I think we share the same sense of humour and also our faith and our love of God unites us. Catharine, the associate vicar, is also really approachable as well as Frieda, who is our NSM (Volunteer) Curate.

My average day (so far) starts at 8.30 for a quick look at the daily readings and prayer with Catherine and David, and then a few hours in the church school, acting as a classroom assistant, helping children read and just really building relationships with children in order to gain opportunities to get them along to SMASH and our other activities for children/youth. Then throughout the week I'm involved in different activities like planning for Time for Praise, our informal service on a Sunday, and 24-7 - our youth home group - or Youth Club on a Thursday evening, Worship Group practises, Home Groups, and Alpha. I also have Friday from 12, and the whole of Saturday off, and I've marked out Monday after our weekly staff meeting as my "creative day" for just worshipping God, reading and of course writing songs.

Tonight I'm off to Choir, as I've been strongly persuaded by the choirmaster who is in desperate need of tenors (some things never change). Then I have a Youth Meeting to plan out this Sunday's Time For Praise which is to be led by the Youth.

I thought I'd just leave you by talking about my walk to church each morning. I walk up a footpath from the front of the house and through an area of parkland, which is right up in the side of the valley, and over the bushes you can see the whole of Newport City Centre, and some of the port and the sea - it's beautiful - I really need to take a camera so I can get a good picture of it to show you, and then I walk, but mostly run because the slope is quite steep down through some woods, jumping over branches and dodging treetrunks. But everytime, sometimes twice a day I walk this route with my mp3 player on, God seems to touch me and fill me up for the next set of activities I'm going to be doing to serve Him. Its amazing, just the wonder of His creation through man, and then running and jumping in praise - I'm constantly finding myself lost in worship especially with the Chris Tomlin song "Enough", which really just seems to fit with being away form home and the familiar and my family and friends.

All of You is more than enough for all of me
For every thirst and every need
You satisfy me with Your love
And all I have in You is more than enough

You are my supply
My breath of life
And still more awesome than I know
You are my reward
Worth living for
And still more awesome than I know

You're my sacrifice
Of greatest price
And still more awesome than I know
You're my coming King
You are everything
And still more awesome than I know

More than all I want
More than all I need
You are more than enough for me
More than all I know
More than all I can see
You are more than enough for me
Chris Tomlin - Enough

Thank you for your love and prayers, and God Bless!
